Trey Lathan Excited for Kansas to Make History at Wembley Stadium
Kansas linebacker Trey Lathan has already visited London twice, but his third trip will carry a much different meaning.
The Jayhawks will face Arizona State at Wembley Stadium in the first major college football game played in London, giving Kansas an opportunity to make history on an international stage.
“It’s just a blessing,” Lathan said at Big 12 Football Media Days. “Us and Arizona State being picked, the first two teams to be able to make history, the first college football game out there. It’s just a feeling that we haven’t really processed yet.”
Lathan admitted he does not know everything about Wembley, but he understands the stadium’s significance.
“I don’t know much, but I know it’s pretty iconic,” Lathan said. “A lot of soccer, a lot of history has been made there. We’re excited to go out there and play.”
Beyond the game itself, Lathan said he is looking forward to giving British fans a closer look at the sport.
“Just showing the British what American football really is,” Lathan said. “Their football is different, but showing them that we really compete. It’s something that a lot of people wake up on Saturdays looking forward to.”
Unlike many of his teammates, Lathan will not be making his first overseas trip. He previously traveled to London with West Virginia through a group called Chambers Elite Climbers before returning for a vacation the following year.
Kansas will also have time to experience the city. Lathan said coach Lance Leipold designated two days for sightseeing, including visits near the River Thames and Buckingham Palace.
“A lot of our teammates have never been overseas,” Lathan said. “They’re looking forward to hopefully watching the changing of the guards.”
For Lathan, the trip represents more than another game. It is a chance for Kansas to introduce itself to a new audience while becoming part of college football history.
