Trevor Bauer hasn't seen an MLB game ever since the former National League Cy Young Award winner was suspended for violating the league's domestic violence and sexual assault policy in 2021. And though it's highly unlikely he'll ever pitch in a big-league game again, Bauer is still playing baseball in some capacity.
On Sunday, we got a glimpse at how Bauer's Long Island Ducks teammates are taking a liking to him. (Hint: It's not much)
Bauer — who is now pitching in the independent Atlantic League after posting among the worst ERAs in Japan last season — pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in Long Island's 13-0 win over the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars. Since it was a doubleheader, the league limited the game to seven innings.
But a no-hitter usually gets an entire team celebrating with a pitcher. That's not what happened here. After the final out, players were celebrating with their backs turned to Bauer and only acknowledged him during the handshake line.
After the game, Bauer took a victory lap on social media about the performance.
But he probably shouldn't expect his phone to be ringing off the hook from MLB teams. Out of the Flying Boxcars' lineup (great name), Bauer faced just five players who had any real experience beyond Single-A ball. He already showed he couldn't hang in the world's second-best league. And this was a demonstrable step down in competition.
A no-hitter against a glorified men's league team won't exactly excite MLB teams. That's for sure.
