Miami edge rusher Damon Wilson II is one of the nation’s premier defenders thanks to his superhuman athleticism, refinement as a pass rusher, and frame. Because of these qualities, he’s primed for a stellar season and is a potential target for the New Orleans Saints in the 2027 NFL Draft. It’s still early, but don’t be surprised to hear his name frequently next offseason.

Edge rusher is projected to be a major need for the Saints. Chase Young is a star, but the depth behind him is lacking. Cameron Jordan will be a key contributor in 2025, but could be facing retirement following the year. Additionally, Carl Granderson has been plagued by inconsistencies, disappearing from certain games. As a result, investing significant capital in the unit is necessary. If they do, they must consider Damon Wilson.

The six-foot-four, 250-pound senior spent his first two years at Georgia before transferring to Missouri ahead of 2025. There, he had an impressive campaign, tallying nine sacks, 54 pressures, and a 16.9% pass rush win rate. Now, he’s at Miami and is seeking to replace the production vacated by first-round picks Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor.

Wilson’s A-list skill is his absurd explosiveness. He flies out of his stance and has a lightning-quick first step. His ability to convert speed to power is unparalleled and allows him to consistently embarrass offensive linemen. Wilson’s capability to win with his athleticism makes him a great edge rusher, but his refinement and usage of pass rush moves separate him from the competition. His estimated 34” arms help him reach his opposition’s chest and let him deploy a variety of moves, including a rip, swim, or club before the lineman reaches him.

Although his pass rush is near-flawless, Wilson isn’t a perfect prospect and has questions he must answer in 2026, mainly about his run defense. As of now, he’s a designated pass rusher and won’t contribute much against the run. He’s not strong enough to battle offensive linemen and can be removed by a plus-blocking tight end (Texas A&M game). Showing scouts that he’s improved in this area and that he can hold his own will be vital to establishing himself as a first-round prospect.

As previously stated, it’s still way too early to name Wilson a perfect fit on the Saints. But that’s not the goal of summer scouting. Instead, it’s meant to inform fans of prospects to watch throughout the year. So, this isn’t saying that the Saints must draft Wilson, but he’s someone they should pay attention to and heavily consider in the offseason.

If all goes well, Damon Wilson could be repping the black and gold next April. He will undoubtedly be on Brandon Staley’s radar, so fans should follow suit. His elite athleticism, refinement as a pass rusher, and frame make him a premier defender in college football and someone the Saints must consider.
