MIDDLETOWN – Brick Memorial High School doesn’t have a trophy case for track & field. That’s about to change.
The Mustangs captured the NJSIAA Central Group 3 boys title Saturday, the school’s first sectional championship in the sport.
“It’s a surreal feeling,” said Tyron Gonzalez, who scored in four events to lead the way. “It’s something I’ve dreamt about, but I didn’t think it would actually happen.”
They were one of four Shore Conference track programs to earn sectional titles over the weekend: Southern, Point Pleasant Borough and Colts Neck all took home girls titles. But none of those three were newcomers to the winner’s circle.
“We had this meet marked on our calendar since the beginning of the year,” Brick Memorial’s Gonzalez said. “This is why we put all that work in.”
Over the two-day meet Brick Memorial scored 76 points, 14 more than runners-up Burlington Township and Colts Neck.
The Mustangs got it done in the throws, the jumps and on the track. Gonzalez won the 400-meter in a time of 56.45 on Friday. During a busy stretch on Saturday, the junior placed second in the 110 hurdles (14.44) and third in the high jump (6-2) – competing in both events simultaneously.
“I came out for track because my friends were doing it and my family wanted me to do it,” Gonzalez said. “I started loving it last year – I could really see some potential in it.”
Fellow junior Anthony Wilson won the 800 (1:57.38) and placed fifth in the 400 (49.54). Senior Ricky Dillon placed second in the 200 (22.49) and fifth in the 100 dash (11.14). Gonzalez, Wilson and Dillon were joined by Shawn Fowler on the second-place 4x400 (3:22.68), with Gonzalez and Wilson splitting 49s.
In the throws, junior Jaxson Ellis won the shot put (60-4.5) and placed fourth in the discus (157-6) while junior Joe Livio delivered a second place in the javelin (152-0).
Gonzalez credited Brick Memorial’s coaching staff for “pushing us extra hard because they know our potential.”
The first sign this spring might hold something special for the Mustangs came in April, when they won their heat at the Penn Relays. For a school that had never won a major team title in track & field – sectional or Ocean Couty – the need for a trophy case has come on fast and furious.
“They’re going to build one now,” Gonzalez said.
