Old school football coaches love to say that the game is won in the trenches and that defense is at the heart of the most successful teams.
There is an abundance of talented defensive linemen and linebackers in the Greater Savannah area who are ready to show off their skills as the high school football season gets started in the next two weeks throughout the state of Georgia.
The group includes Effingham County junior RJ Brown, the standout defensive lineman whose list of offers includes one from Kirby Smart at Georgia.
Standout senior edge Jeffrey McCormick of Calvary Day is looking to follow up his first season of varsity football, where he helped lead the Cavs to the Class A-3A state title game while setting a school record with 18 sacks.
McCormick racked up a school record of 18 sacks with 17 quarterback hurries and had 60 tackles, with 20 tackles for losses in his first season playing at the varsity level. He was an All-Greater Savannah first-team selection on the edge.
Brown makes the move from Savannah Christian to Effingham County and becomes a full-time defensive lineman for the Rebels. He has a long list of college offers including Georgia, Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State.
The Gardner-Webb commit is coming off a season where he had 46 tackles with four for losses and a pair of interceptions. The 6-foot-1, 310-pound defensive tackle was an All-Greater Savannah first-team selection.
Jones earned All-Greater Savannah first-team honors as a linebacker after he helped lead the Blazer to an undefeated season and SCISA state title. He had 91 tackles with 10 for losses, with five sacks, four interceptions, two caused fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three blocked punts and two blocked field goals. He had four defensive touchdowns including three interceptions returned for scores.
Deal had a team-high 99 tackles with six for losses, five sacks and an interception at linebacker. He was an All-Greater Savannah first-team pick as a junior.
Baker III is back as a senior leader on a stout Cavalier defense. He had 69 tackles last season, with seven for losses, with 14 quarterback hurries and five sacks, He was an All-Region 3-3A first-team pick. The middle linebacker has committed to play at Arkansas State.
Brown was an All-Region 3-3A first-team pick for the Warriors last year at linebacker, when he led a strong Jenkins defense with 105 tackles.
Scott earned first-team All-Region 1-4A honors for the Cadets last year and returns as a senior leader one the line for the Cadets. He had five sacks and 27 tackles as a junior. The 6-2, 285-pounder holds an offer from West Georgia.
The 5-foot-11, 225-pounder defensive lineman had 50 tackles, with eight for losses last season and was a second-team All-Region 1-6A selection. He doubles as a track and field star as he finished second in the Class 6A state meet in the shot put, with a personal best throw of 52-feet, 6.25 inches in May.
Smith has emerged as a senior leader on and off the field for the Cadets this season.
Richardson will be a leader on the Raider defense after a standout junior season. He was second on the team last year with 99 tackles, including five for losses, with three sacks, as he earned All-Region 3A Division I honors.
Young had a stellar sophomore campaign for the Blazers at linebacker last year to earn All-Region honors. He had 90 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions on the season.
The junior is set to take over as a leader on the Warrior defensive line.

Coach John Adams said he is expecting a strong season from Fields, a senior leader for the Tigers.
The standout lineman had 40 stops with 12 tackles for losses last season to earn All-Region honors.
Davis was an All-Region 3-3A first-team selection last year when he recorded 51 tackles with eight for losses and four sacks for the Rebels.
Cooler earned All-Region honors for the Sharks last year and takes on the role of a senior leader at Islands.
The standout defensive end had 28 tackles with eight for losses, 13 quarterback hurries and four sacks as a junior.
Bey returns to lead the Phoenix defensive line. He had 34 tackles last season and earned All-Region 1-4A honors.
Daniels is back as a key man up front for the Raiders. He had 54 tackles, with four for losses and a pair of sacks last season to earn All-Region honors for the Raiders. He is also a standout wrestler for the Raiders.
Headley had 37 stops last year with seven for losses and three sacks for the Hornets to earn All-Region honors.
Daniels returns as a senior leader for the Knights after recording 52 tackles with six for losses last season.
Vasquez is also a standout wrestler who finished third in the 147-pound weight class at the Class 5A state meet as a junior. He had 54 tackles and was an All-Region 1-5A selection last season.
Also a standout at running back, Newton led the Bulldogs in tackles last year at linebacker.
Look for Thomas to play a big role in the Cadet defense this year on the edge.
Murtha was another All-Region pick for the Mustangs last year after recording 51 tackles with a sack and an interception as a junior.
Kelley is a standout on both sides of the line for the Lions. He had 17 tackles for losses last year among his 55 stops and recorded five sacks. A standout catcher on the Lion baseball team, he has committed to play baseball at USC Sumter.
Green was a first-team All-Region 3-3A pick for the Knights last season when he had 61 tackles with a pair of sacks.
Ausfeld steps into a senior leadership role after a junior season where he had 40 tackles, with seven for losses, a pair of sacks and an interception.
The 6-3, 215-pounder is back as a senior leader after recording 51 tackles with four for losses last year as a defensive end.
Smith is a senior leader for the Atom Smasher as an outside linebacker. He had 37 stops as a junior.
The senior edge is a key man on the Tigers front seven.
