U.S. Open local qualifying continues this week at 10 sites on Monday, another five on Tuesday and five more on Thursday. There will still be seven more days beyond that before the field is narrowed for final qualifying.
Thousands of wanna-be golfers are taking their hacks with long-shot hopes of making it to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club for the 126th U.S. Open. Among the weekend hackers are quite a few professional athletes who excelled in other sports.
On Monday, the USGA posted a who's who of local qualifiers.
It's probably no surprise Tony Romo of CBS Sports NFL coverage is on this list. Nor that we see Mardy Fish, a two-time winner of the American Century Championship near Tahoe. Ex-Patriot Danny Woodhead has taken a crack at qualifying in the past, as well.
The one name on the USGA's list that stirred some reaction was Garrett Rank, an NHL referee.
