Ever since news broke about Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby potentially losing his college eligibility for betting on college football, it’s been speculated he’ll enter the NFL’s supplemental draft and forgo his senior season.
And amid the mess that Sorsby is having to wade through to determine his future, he’s been continuously linked to one NFL team if he does go the supplemental draft route: the Cleveland Browns.
It’s no secret the Browns have some instability at the QB position, and a player as talented as Sorsby is could potentially be the answer the team has been looking for.
However, Browns head coach Todd Monken poured cold water on the idea of Sorsby ending up in Cleveland while speaking to reporters on Monday.
“Not at all. It’s not even come across my desk. I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road — that’s my opinion,” he said. “I like the quarterbacks that we have. I think that’s a slippery slope, irrespective of talent. In terms of the situation he’s put himself in, we don’t know what that is.

“He put himself in that situation, and we’ve seen in other sports where players have been banned for life for [betting on] professional sports. I think that’s a slippery slope to go down that road. That’s a question for Andrew and for management. From my end of it, it’s kind of a tough angle to go down that road and think that’s going to be your franchise quarterback.”
To Monken’s point, any team thinking about possibly drafting Sorsby could be playing with fire.
If a team uses a second-round pick on Sorsby in the supplemental draft, they then surrender a second-round pick in the 2027 draft, which is being heralded as one of the most talent-rich in decades.
That’s a big gamble for any team not knowing if Sorsby will even be allowed to play in the NFL. At the very least, he will presumably have to serve a suspension for gambling. As we’ve seen in the past, the NFL likes to make examples out of gambling-related suspensions.
Calvin Ridley and Miles Austin were suspended an entire season back in 2022, while Jameson Williams and Nicholas Petit-Frere were suspended six games and Isiaah Rodgers Jr. for an entire season in 2023 — all for gambling-related issues.
