The New York Yankees need another arm. Injuries have stretched their starting rotation thin and Sandy Alcantara is the most talented pitcher who will likely be available ahead of this season’s trade deadline.

But his early‑season struggles have raised questions.

Alcantara has allowed 21 runs over 15 2/3 innings in his last four starts. His ERA sits at 8.42 after surrendering five earned runs in five innings Monday night against the Dodgers. He gave up two two‑run homers and issued five walks. It was another rough outing for a pitcher still finding his form after Tommy John surgery.

On MLB Network Radio Tuesday morning, however, ESPN analyst Eduardo Pérez had some good news for teams like the Yankees looking for an ace.

Perez, a former big leaguer and son of a Hall of Famer, said he believes that Alcantara is tipping his pitches.

“With AI and people coming in and out to help the players,” Pérez said, “someone might be reading his body language.”

It’s a cryptic comment from an extremely plugged-in analyst, but it is good news since the Yankees are one of the best teams at finding tells and fixing them.

The Marlins have not publicly said they are going to trade Alcantara, but they basically have to if they are going to follow their rebuild plans. The former National League Cy Young winner is their only chip that will bring back the prospects needed to turn their franchise around.

The question is: Do the Yankees have the prospects to pull it off? Will Warren has already been floated as part of a possible trade to Miami. Spencer Jones could be a headliner on a deal, but the Yankees will not move George Lombard, Jr.

The appeal is obvious.

With Gerrit Cole on the injured list and Luis Gil still building innings, New York needs a frontline starter. Alcantara won the 2022 NL Cy Young Award. At his peak, he can dominate a lineup the way few pitchers in baseball can.

This little tidbit from Perez may be key to Alcantara finding his way back.
