Detroit — The Tigers took the series from the Minnesota Twins. Then they took an outfielder from the Twins.

The Tigers announced Thursday afternoon that they have claimed veteran outfielder James Outman off waivers from the Twins. Outman, who hit 23 home runs in 2023 for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was designated for assignment by the Twins earlier this month.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Outman, the Tigers transferred Javy Báez (right ankle) to the 60-day injured list.

Outman is likely heading to Triple-A Toledo. He played in 49 games for the Twins this season and batted .156/.229/.250 with no home runs and three RBIs. He was acquired in a trade with the Dodgers last July.

Outman, 29, a seventh-round pick by the Dodgers in 2018, can play all three outfield positions. He has mostly played center field this season.

Outman's best season in the major leagues was in 2023, when he had 23 home runs, 70 RBIs, 16 stolen bases and 81 walks in 151 games for the Dodgers. Outman, who bats left-handed, was a 3.4 WAR player in 2023, but he's been a part-time player and a negative-WAR player in the three seasons since.

The roster move came after the Tigers beat the Twins, 11-0, to take two of three in the three-game series at Comerica Park.
