With the No. 69 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, included in one of the draft’s competitive balance rounds, the Tigers snagged another college pitcher, taking right-hander Evan Dempsey out of Florida Gulf Coast University.
With the No. 22 overall pick, Detroit took Coastal Carolina right-hander Cameron Flukey, making it two college arms with two of the first three picks it holds in this draft. The other pick, at No. 61, was Kansas shortstop Tyson LeBlanc.
Dempsey, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound pitcher who hails from Tampa, Fla., appeared sparingly as a freshman in 2024 before becoming a key arm for FGCU the last two seasons. He’s also an intriguing two-way player, though he’s likely a pitcher at the next level.
Dempsey has a career ERA of 2.88 and 207 strikeouts over 162⅔ innings pitched over three seasons. He mixes a hard fastball with a pair of breaking pitches in his arsenal, with the fastball sitting at 92-94 mph and topping out around 95.
He can also hit, with a career batting average of .326 across more than 600 at-bats from the left side of the plate.
What Detroit plans to do with Dempsey is surely not set in stone, and he’s an intriguing prospect to add to the farm system.
