Detroit — The Tigers have done some catcher shifting at Triple-A Toledo.
Tomas Nido, who had been in the organization the last two seasons, has been released. That prompted the Tigers to sign another veteran catcher, Carlos Perez, to a minor-league deal and assign him to Toledo.
Perez, 35, has played parts of five seasons in the big leagues, but not since 2023 with the Athletics. He's also played for the Angels, Braves and Rangers.
Perez has spent most of the season in the Houston organization at Triple-A Sugar Land, batting .222/.303/.396.
A solid and smart defensive catcher, he has been in professional baseball since 2008 and has spent parts of 13 seasons at the Triple-A level with nine different organizations.

SCOUTING REPORT
➤ TBD, Royals: The Royals have not announced their starting pitcher.
➤ LHP Tarik Skubal (6-5, 2.83), Tigers: This will be his second-to-last start before the Aug. 3 trade deadline and he’s coming off a gem (seven scoreless innings, nine strikeouts, 87 pitches against the Angels). If he had enough innings to qualify, he’d rank fifth in ERA, third in WHIP (0.931) and fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (10.7) in the American League. But, odd stat: Lefties are slashing .286/.304/.455 with a .758 OPS in 79 plate appearances, well above his career norms. Lefties have done damage on his four-seam and sinker (15 for 37, three homers).
