NEW YORK – The Tigers have placed relief pitcher Will Vest on the injured list with inflammation in the back of his elbow.

Beau Brieske, a righty who has pitched for the Tigers over the last five seasons, has been called up and will be available out of the bullpen in the series finale against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, July 1.

The Vest situation is not believed to be ligament related.

“He came out of his last outing a little banged up," manager A.J. Hinch said. "We gave it a couple days. We need to get further tests. He's not going to be available.”

Hinch called Vest’s elbow injury “right posterior elbow inflammation.”

Vest has pitched in 27 games, struggling with a 6.08 ERA. Back in May, Vest spent time on the IL with an arm issue, and Hinch was not sure if it’s related.

“Tough loss to lose Will out of the out of the bullpen. But coming out of his last outing when he reported some soreness, we need to get it looked at," Hinch said. "As we got it looked at, we need further testing. So that that prompted us last night to make the decision to get Beau here this morning.”

Vest last pitched on June 27 against Houston. He threw one inning, giving up four hits and two earned runs.

Brieske was told late Tuesday night.

“He's been doing really well at AAA,” Hinch said of Brieske. “He will replace him, getting him here close to game time, and he'll be in the bullpen [Wednesday] and ready to go.”

Brieske was able to get on a plane and arrived in New York on Wednesday morning. He bounded up the dugout steps in Yankee Stadium and walked toward the outfield for some work as Hinch was talking to reporters and making his announcement.

Brieske has pitched in four games in 2026 for the Tigers. He has given up six runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.

When he was sent down to Toledo, he worked on his fastball command.

“He couldn't really throw the ball where he wanted to, the shape of the fastball wasn't as effective as it's been,” Hinch said “Now this guy, when he's got a dynamic fastball, pitches toward the back end of the game and comes in throwing a ton of strikes and challenges guys by getting in good leverage.”

Hinch said the Tigers were impressed with how Brieske has pitched recently in Toledo.

“His last few outings have been the best outings,” Hinch said. “While he's been down there, looked a lot more like himself, and the confidence that comes with that really impacts both outings. So, I'm anxious to see him. I'm thankful that he took the demotion last time with the seriousness to go and work on some things so that he's available to us. We need it.”

Now, knowing that Vest has been dealing with an elbow, weakening the bullpen, it underscores how important it has been that Casey Mize was able to pitch seven innings on Monday and Tarik Skubal went six on Tuesday.

On top of that, Detroit’s big lead Tuesday helped ease burden on the bullpen.

“What Tarrick did and what Casey did to get us where they could, and what our offense did to be able to absorb the innings with little to no stress, was right what we needed,” Hinch said.
