Tigers receive unexpected Gleyber Torres update amid new trade odds originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Detroit Tigers have begun to climb out of the hole they dug themselves into during May, and Tarik Skubal's absence this season, but they're still on the outside looking in for the postseason hunt.

At 30-43, the Tigers are trending towards selling at the 2026 MLB trade deadline. In such a scenario, Skubal's name will be an incredibly popular one in rumors. But another Tigers All-Star is also one to keep an eye on.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, Gleyber Torres, the $22.025 million Tigers free-agent signing, has an unexpectedly high 80% chance of being traded this season.

Tigers' Gleyber Torres gets 80% chance of being traded

"Chance of being traded: 80%," Passan and McDaniel write. "His $22 million contract does the Tigers no favors, but if that's the price for a contract to get someone who reaches 40$ of the time, it's worth it - even if a team's strength at second relegates Torres to DH duty."

This is a very interesting update for the Tigers, as Torres has an 80% chance to be traded this season, according to this ESPN duo.

It makes sense, as Torres is a free agent after the 2026 season, and he wouldn't bring anything of value back for the Tigers if they lost him in free agency.

If they're selling anyone this season, Torres makes a ton of sense to part ways with. If Skubal is getting dealt, Torres shouldn't be a surprise.

But, considering the lack of buzz about a Torres trade, even since he's returned from the injured list and has played well, it's a little unexpected that the Tigers have an 80% chance to trade the former New York Yankees All-Star this season.

Through 43 games this season, Torres has 1.8 bWAR with 44 hits, six doubles, four homers, 18 RBIs, 29 walks to 33 strikeouts, and a .395 on-base percentage and .295 slugging percentage to go with a .790 OPS.

His 120 OPS+ is one of the best marks of his career, so the Tigers could be trading Torres this summer at, or close to, the peak of his offensive ability.

That should help Detroit land a solid return for the player that has a projected 80% chance of being dealt this summer.
