Detroit — Tigers right-hander Jackson Jobe is scheduled to make his second rehab start with Double-A Erie on Saturday night at Chesapeake, Virginia.
But manager AJ Hinch made it clear there is still considerable road between that start and his return to the big leagues.
“He’s completed three innings twice in the minor leagues,” Hinch said. “Which (in terms of a normal spring training build up) is like March 3. We’re trying to keep it in the context of where he’s at in his buildup just being at full volume, full strength.”
Jobe, who had Tommy John surgery in June of 2025, made a three-inning start against hitters in the Florida Coast League and then on Sunday threw three innings at Double-A Erie. He allowed one unearned run with three strikeouts, but he also hit a batter, balked and threw a wild pitch.
“You factor in the surgery and we’re going to have to consider a lot of different things,” Hinch said. “Until he gets to five or six innings in general, that’s where I would draw the line (to planning for his return). But we’re going to be conservative on top of that, coming off Tommy John surgery.
“We’re going to be wary of how much rest he needs and how slowly we build him up.”
In other injury/rehab news:
▶ Right-handed reliever Burch Smith threw two pitches in his rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Thursday and pulled himself out of the game.
“We’re going to get him evaluated in the shoulder and the lat region,” Hinch said. “It’s never good when a guy has to call it off. There is some concern there. But there’s no update unti he gets evaluated.”
▶ Shortstop/center fielder Javier Báez (ankle) is transferring his rehab assignment to Toledo and he is expected to be in the lineup Saturday. He made two starts with Low-A Lakeland. He was hit by a pitch in each game.
▶ Outfielder Kerry Carpenter, while not on the injured list, is playing through soreness in his heel. He was not in the starting lineup Friday, though that was a strategic decision by Hinch. The Royals started a right-handed opener but were expected to use lefty Noah Cameron in bulk relief.
“He’s going to be dealing with that until further notice,” Hinch said of Carpenter’s heel. “I think we resolved the cleat issue that had led to the discomfort. But he’s going to be a little symptomatic until he tells me different.”
