Three top defenders Liverpool could sign to replace Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate is reportedly set to leave Liverpool as a free agent this summer.

The Frenchman had been locked in discussions for months over a new contract, but those talks have ultimately collapsed without a resolution.

Jeremy Jacquet is scheduled to arrive from Rennes, but with Joe Gomez likely to leave Anfield, manager Arne Slot may look to add a quality centre-back to the squad this summer.

Below we look at three names the Reds could sign in the upcoming transfer window.

Micky van de Ven

Van de Ven is an elite defender who is highly rated for his pace, physicality and composure.

The 25-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2025-26 campaign, starting all but just three of their Premier League matches.

Van de Ven is contracted with Spurs until 2029, but given the club’s struggles this term, he could seek a new challenge at another club.

The Netherlands international could be tempted to join Liverpool, who secured Champions League qualification despite enduring a disappointing season.

Jon Martin

The Reds will likely need to spend a premium for a top Premier League-proven defender.

Given their significant spending spree last summer, they may be unwilling to pay over the odds for new acquisitions.

Real Sociedad’s Jon Martin appears to be a good fit for Liverpool, as he is a young and quality centre-back who could be signed for a decent fee.

Martin enjoyed a breakout season for Sociedad, starting 25 La Liga matches and scoring two goals.

Jan Paul van Hecke

Jan Paul van Hecke has emerged as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

He started 36 league matches to help Brighton & Hove Albion secure a place in next season’s Uefa Conference League.

Liverpool have been linked with an interest in Paul van Hecke, but they face competition from Tottenham.

Brighton could be open to sell their top centre-back, as he has just a year left on his current contract.
