For the seventeeth time in his career, Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartans will be dancing into the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament thanks to a win over a feisty Louisville team. It wasn't perfect, but MSU was able to maintain a lead for the whole contest and pulled away at the end to advance in the tournament.
Below, you can find our top three takeaways from the win.
Jeremy Fears had sixteen sweet assists (see what I did there?) to help the Spartans move past Louisville. In doing so, Fears set both the Spartans' record for most assists in an NCAA Tournament game, and the most assists through the first two games in the NCAA Tournament in school history.
Fears was a rightful All-American this year, but thus far in the NCAA Tournament, he's surpassing what he did in the regular season, earning his moniker of 'floor general' and setting records left and right. Fears has been one of the most impressive and dominant players of the tournament thus far, doing everything for the Spartans while playing 37 minutes. This team goes where Fears goes, and he's been impressive thus far.
We learned in last year's NCAA Tournament that Coen Carr shows up when the lights are brightest, as Carr was arguably the breakout star for the Spartans' last tournament run. Carr dominated Louisville on both ends in this one, scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. The regular season was up-and-down for Carr, but he picked the right time to have his best game of the season, and maybe of his career, against the Cardinals.
While you are never going to complain about an NCAA Tournament win, it needs to be said that the turnovers will need to be addressed and cleaned up before the Sweet Sixteen. The Spartans had 15 turnovers in this one, most of them coming in the first half, and, honestly, this could have been a much more comfortable win if they could have limited some of the unforced errors.
