Rutgers basketball headlined the final full week of February as both Scarlet Knight programs continued late-season Big Ten play, while spring sports programs pushed forward through the opening stretch of their 2026 seasons.
Women’s Basketball Falls To Indiana, Set For Finale at Nebraska
Rutgers women’s basketball closed its home schedule Wednesday night with a 79–69 loss to Indiana at Jersey Mike’s Arena. The Scarlet Knights placed five players in double figures, led by Zachara Perkins with 15 points, and carried a halftime lead before Indiana surged ahead in the fourth quarter.
The game marked Rutgers’ final appearance in Piscataway this season, with the program honoring its seniors pregame. Rutgers now turns to its regular-season finale on the road at Nebraska, aiming to finish the year competitively while continuing to emphasize defensive toughness and balanced scoring production.
Men’s Basketball Comeback Bid Falls Short vs. Washington
Rutgers men’s basketball dropped a 79–72 decision to Washington this week, its second straight loss following a road defeat at Minnesota. Rutgers trailed by as many as 18 points before mounting a late second-half push that cut the deficit to single digits in the closing minutes.
Offensive inconsistency and early defensive lapses proved costly, as Rutgers struggled from three-point range and on the glass while playing from behind most of the night. The Scarlet Knights now enter the final stretch of the regular season seeking to stabilize momentum before the Big Ten Tournament.
Wrestling Ranked No. 11 Nationally Entering Big Ten Championships
Rutgers wrestling enters postseason competition ranked No. 11 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll, closing the dual-meet season with all 10 starters nationally ranked and positioned for NCAA qualification.
The NCAA’s final coaches rankings and RPI release confirmed Rutgers’ depth across the lineup, with every Scarlet Knight starter earning a national ranking and seven placed inside the top 20 at their respective weight classes. Several wrestlers — including Joseph Olivieri (141), Andrew Barbosa (165), Lenny Pinto (174), Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184), and Remy Cotton (197) — sit in strong position for NCAA bids entering March.
Coaches’ rankings and RPI serve as primary NCAA selection criteria alongside conference-tournament placement, putting Rutgers in a solid position to qualify a full or near-full lineup for the NCAA Championships. The Scarlet Knights now turn to the Big Ten Championships, where automatic bids and national seeding will be decided against the country’s deepest conference field. The Big Ten leads the country with 87 bids to the tournament, by far the most of any conference.
Baseball Falls To Virginia Tech 2-1, Set For Keith LeClair Classic
After opening the season with a 3-1 series win over the College of Charleston, the Scarlet Knights took down Virginia Tech 16-1 in a run-rule victory (eight innings) to open up a three-game set in Blacksburg. However, Rutgers was not so fortunate the rest of the way, letting three different leads get away in a 9-8 loss (10 innings).
The Scarlet Knights scored three runs in the top of the tenth, but Virginia Tech responded with four runs to get the win, and on Sunday, Rutgers narrowly fell to the Hokies 4-3 after leading 2-1 in the fourth inning. A midweek contest at St. Joe’s was postponed, but the Knights will be back in action at the Keith LeClair Classic this weekend, facing East Carolina, Western Carolina, and Troy.
Rutgers will host Georgetown at Bainton Field on Tuesday for its home opener next week before battling Bryant in its first home weekend series of 2025.
Softball Heads To Florida For Unconquered Invitational
Rutgers softball is an even 7-7 after three tournaments, the last being the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, where the Scarlet Knights defeated Bethune-Cookman 6-0 and UC San Diego 10-3, but fell to several other opponents, including an exhibition against #1 Team Japan.
This weekend, Rutgers heads to the Unconquered Invitational, where they will partake in a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. The Scarlet Knights will take on FGCU on Friday, beginning at 11:30 AM, and host #10 Florida State starting at 10 AM on Saturday.
Men’s Lacrosse Moves To 4-1 By Defeating LIU
#14/16 Rutgers men’s lacrosse improved to 4-1 as it cruised past Long Island University on Tuesday afternoon, 13-5. After facilities workers cleared out SHI Stadium following the massive blizzard earlier in the week, the Knights raced out to a 6-0 lead, outshot the visitors 47-34, had a 36-17 advantage in ground balls, and won 13 of 20 faceoffs.
Grayson Vorgang led Rutgers with three goals and two assists with five points on the day, while Kasey Mongillo, Joe Juengerkes, and Colin Kelly all had two goals. Colin Zeller, Colin Kurdyla, Shane Murphy, and Bennett Raphalian each had one goal apiece.
In the net, Cardin Stoller had eight saves and was named to the USILA Team of the Week after making 14 saves against Villanova for an 8-7 victory. He allowed just one goal over the final 42 minutes of that contest.
He leads the Big Ten in saves per game, is second in save percentage, and is third in goals-against-average through five contests. Stoller has stopped 58 shots for a save percentage of 57.4% and holds a goals-against-average of 8.91, all incredibly impressive numbers early this season.
Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Princeton
Rutgers women’s lacrosse (3-2) fell to #14 Princeton 15-9 on the road Wednesday evening, as the Tigers used a 39-29 shot advantage and a 6-2 scoring run in the second quarter to defeat the Scarlet Knights. Katie Buck tied a single-game program record with 13 draw controls, while goalkeeper Simone Koryszewski saved a season-high 13 attempts in net.
On offense, Payton Tini led the Knights with a hat trick, while Alex Popham created a spark off the bench with a season-high two goals. Lily Dixon also scored two points on a goal and an assist, as the team captain is just four assists away from setting the program’s career assist record.
It was not enough to defeat Princeton, even as Rutgers used a 4-1 run to get within 12-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, while Koryszewski saved six consecutive shots during the scoring run. But the Tigers scored three more goals in the final seven minutes to ice the contest and secure the victory.
Track & Field Set For Big Ten Indoor Championships
Rutgers track & field now shifts fully into indoor championship season as the Scarlet Knights prepare for the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Indianapolis. The conference meet marks the culmination of the indoor schedule and serves as the primary qualification pathway toward NCAA Indoor Championships competition in March.
Rutgers enters the championship weekend following a series of indoor meets that produced school records and national-level performances across both track and field events. The Big Ten meet will determine all-conference honors, podium finishes, and potential NCAA qualifiers as the Scarlet Knights compete against one of the nation’s deepest indoor fields.
Women’s Tennis To Host #25 Yale
Rutgers women’s tennis returns home on Friday to host #25 Yale, continuing the early spring portion of its dual-match schedule. The Scarlet Knights have been building match rhythm through non-conference competition, with home matches providing key opportunities to solidify doubles pairings and singles lineup order.
Last time out, Rutgers defeated Army 4-0, as the doubles pair of Mai Nguyen and Zuzanna Frankowska resulted in a 6-1 victory for the Scarlet Knights, with the duo of Zeynep Ilker and Stella Schmitz also winning their match, 6-1, to clinch the doubles point. Ilker, Schmitz, and Savannah Cohen then added wins in singles to secure the win for Rutgers.
