When the official start of the new NFL league year arrives, all teams must be under the brand-new $301.2 million salary cap. The Vikings are over by $40+ million as we speak.
Minnesota will start to slash contracts, sitting at $43 million over the cap. They must be under it by 4:00 p.m. on March 11th. To assist the Vikings in getting there, the team will either trade or release running back Aaron Jones and tackle Javon Hargrave, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The move will free up $18.65 million in cap space.
Per ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert, other moves could include defensive tackle Jonathan Allen and center Ryan Kelly. A restructuring may occur with wide receiver Justin Jefferson, tight end T.J. Hockenson, and tackle Brian O’Neill.
Rumors have also been floating around that the Vikings will listen to any offers on quarterback J.J. McCarthy. If they decide to hold on to him, the team will need to sign a QB who will push McCarthy to be his best, or one who can replace him immediately if he were to go down with an injury.
The Vikings' cap issues may make things very interesting for them this offseason, especially if a name like Kirk Cousins or Kyler Murray comes into play.
