For a second-straight season, the UCLA Bruins saw their season end in the Round of 32. UCLA fell 73-57 to UConn on Sunday as the Bruins offense crumbled without Tyler Bilodeau. The 57 points was the second-fewest by UCLA in a game this season.
Familiar issues arose for Donovan Dent, who went 2-9 from the field, being unable to get UCLA buckets when they needed them most. Dent didn’t have a ton of help out there either, Xavier Booker scored a team-high 13 points but did most of his work in the first half.
After a very quiet first half for Eric Dailey Jr., the junior ended up finishing with 12 points and five rebounds. Dailey had stringed together some strong showings but he struggled against UConn in the higher pressure environment. Trent Perry’s struggles were even worse, scoring five points on 2-8 shooting.
UCLA’s bench didn’t provide a boost at all on Sunday. The Bruin reserves managed to score only five points, with Eric Freeny and Jamar Brown not scoring in 19 combined minutes. UConn’s bench scored 17 points, with Jayden Ross scoring 11 by himself.
Without Bilodeau UCLA was unable to stretch the floor. The Bruins got up only 13 threes, even though they were shooting a respectable 38% from deep. UConn hit eight threes in the game, with forward Alex Karabon hitting four of them alone.
As expected, the Bruins had trouble on the glass with Bilodeau. UConn out-rebounded 36-24 with the Huskies grabbing 11 offensive rebounds. UCLA got out-worked inside, having just 20 points in the paint compared to UConn’s 30.
Since the trip to the Final Four in Mick Cronin’s second season in Westwood, UCLA has not made it past the Sweet 16 over the past five years.
