Bradford Jennings went to the UIL state track and field meet two years ago and not only won a state championship with Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, but set a Class 5A record in the high jump.
Now he's jumping higher and has a gold medal from the Big 12 outdoor championships. The Texas Tech sophomore cleared a personal record 7 feet, 3¼ inches on Friday, May 16, in Lawrence, Kansas, the second day of the conference meet at Rock Chalk Park.
Jennings became the first Tech men's high jumper to win the Big 12 outdoor title since the Red Raiders bagged four in a row from 2014-17: one each by Bradley Adkins and JaCorian Duffield and two by Trey Culver.
Jennings won state two years ago by going 7-1 3/4.
He became the third Tech athlete to win a conference title this week. On the first day, Shelby Frank won the women's hammer throw and Ernest Cheruiyot the men's 10,000 meters.

The fifth-ranked BYU women have 48 1/2 points, followed by No. 7 Baylor with 38 1/2, Oklahoma State with 38 and No. 10 Tech with 29.
In other event finals Friday, May 16, Tech's Victoria Gorlova got third in the long jump with a wind-assisted season-best 21 feet, 0 inches. Olivia Cade was sixth in the pole vault with a personal record 13-9 3/4.
The Tech men scored seven points in the long jump with Walker Norris finishing fourth (wind-legal 24-2 1/2) and Garison Breeding seventh (wind-legal 23-4 1/2). Also scoring were Aleksandr Gerasimov, fifth in the high jump (6-11) Trey Wilson, sixth in the shot put (season-best 63-4) and Titus Kimaru, sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8 minutes, 44.30 seconds).
Tech's without sophomore standout Malachi Snow, who's been scratched with a hamstring injury, a Tech spokesman said. Snow was co-high point scorer at the Big 12 indoor, where he tied the meet record in winning the 60-meter hurdles and finished second in the 60 meters.
On Saturday, May 17, field-event finals are scheduled from 2 p.m. through 6:30 p.m. and running-event finals from 5:05 p.m. to 8:40 p.m.
