Two years ago, Tim Wiedemeyer stood on the 72nd hole of the European Amateur Championship needing a par to clinch the biggest victory of his life. He birdied four straight holes to lead by one with a hole to play. His tee shot went wayward. His score was a quadruple bogey. He had one hand on the trophy, and it still slipped from his grasp.
Not this time.
Wiedemeyer, the 21-year-old German who's set to begin his senior season at Texas Tech this fall, won the 2026 European Amateur Championship on Saturday at Vanajanlinna Golf & Country Club in Finland, exorcising the demons from two years ago in Denmark. He once again stood on the 72nd hole with a one-shot lead. This time, he got the job done.
"I don't know what to think right now" Wiedemeyer said. "It's going to take a bit of time to sink in. I'm just so happy to get it done.
"Walking down the last couple of holes I was thinking about how I made that nine a couple of years ago, so it feels good to get it done and not make a nine on the last hole."
Wiedemeyer finished at 13-under 271 for the week, topping Nevill Ruiter by two shots to hold on. Wiedemeyer opened in 71 before consecutive 6-under 65s put him in control heading to the final round. A 68 on Saturday sealed the biggest victory of his life.
With the win, Wiedemeyer earns an exemption into the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, set for July 16-19.
"It's a dream come true to play a major" Wiedemeyer said. "I'm just going to try and learn as much as possible and whatever happens there, happens."
