Texas A&M's spring season is off and running, finishing the fourth practice on Thursday afternoon, while coach Mike Elko and his staff are taking full advantage of the dead recruiting period ending, opening up visit dates every week/weekend, including one of the top-ranked defenders in the 2027 cycle. On Thursday, it was confirmed that the Aggies are currently hosting four-star edge, Mekai Brown.
Among Texas A&M's ten commitments in the 2027 class, four-star Houston-based DL Kaden McCarty represents the lone edge commitment, and while his elite bend and athleticism stick out, Mekai Brown's 6'7" frame, power, and versatility have led to his rise as a top 50-ranked prospect with immense potential in the right scheme.
Already receiving nearly 30 offers, the Connecticut native will likely spend significant time with defensive line coaches Eljah Robinson and Tony Jerod-Eddie this week, as this relationship will be vital to creating a healthy connection before the blue-chip pass rusher takes his remaining visits this spring/summer. Still, Mike Elko's track record of landing commitments from versatile defensive linemen from the East Coast is notable.
Brown's 2025 season was shortened to just four appearances, while his 2024 sophomore season included 36 tackles, seven sacks, and seven tackles for loss. Brown's 2026 senior season, if he stays healthy, could make him a five-star prospect before signing with a team.
According to 247Sports, Brown is currently positioned as the 49th-ranked prospect in the 2027 class, the 8th-ranked Edge, and the No. 1-ranked prospect in Connecticut.
