Texas A&M’s pursuit of elite talent never slows down, and even with a deep, young running back room, the Aggies remain firmly in the mix for five‑star running back Landen Williams‑Callis. The No. 3 running back in the 2027 class will announce his decision on Saturday, choosing from a final group that includes Texas A&M, Texas, and Missouri.
While most believe the Aggies sits second in that trio, they’re also the only finalist without a 2027 running back commit a gap that keeps the door cracked open. At the same time, A&M’s current roster is loaded with underclassmen talent. Outside of redshirt junior Rueben Owens II, every scholarship running back is a sophomore or younger, including multiple former four‑star prospects. For a player of Williams‑Callis’ caliber, that can read as either a crowded depth chart or a clear path to early opportunity.
The Aggies have pushed hard to stay in the fight, but even with that momentum, On3’s Steve Wiltfong still believes Texas is the likely destination when Williams‑Callis announces his verbal commitment.
In today’s era of NIL and constant roster movement, staffs know that a “cluttered” backfield can turn into a thin one overnight. Seven scholarship backs can become four in a matter of months. Because of that, coaches recruit the best players they can land and let competition sort out the rest.
What continues to separate Texas A&M under Mike Elko is the way they recruit. The staff’s approach leaves a lasting impression. Recruits consistently describe feeling wanted, valued, and treated like family.
