The Texas A&M (24-17, 8-11 SEC) falls in game one of the Cotton Holding Lone Star Showdown, losing 2-1 to No. 1 Texas (35-5, 17-2 SEC) on the road in Austin.

It was a game dominated by pitching, with both teams struggling to generate offense until the later innings. Aggie starter Ryan Prager delivered one of his strongest performances in recent memory, holding the opposition scoreless through 5.2 innings. However, the Aggies' offense faltered, reverting to old habits of chasing pitches outside the zone. The clutch hitting that had been a hallmark of their recent success was notably absent.

The matchup may have played a role, as the Aggies have historically struggled against left-handed pitchers, a trend that continued tonight. Ben Royo was the lone bright spot, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Unfortunately, the rest of the lineup was plagued by weak groundouts and double plays. Even when they made solid contact, the balls fell short of clearing the fence, resulting in easy outs. Their sole run came in an unusual fashion, a towering infield single by Wyatt Henseler that was misplayed by the first baseman, allowing Royo to score.

It was a tough night for the Aggies, but performances like Prager's and Royo's offer some positives to build on. The Aggies will get a chance to even up the series on Saturday evening when they the Longhorns in Game 2 at 3:00 p.m. CT.
