After finishing the 2023 season with an 11-6 record and losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 26-7 in the wild-card round, the Miami Dolphins used their second-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft on offensive tackle Patrick Paul.
Paul had spent the previous five years at Houston, earning All-AAC honors twice and All-Big 12 honors once, and he entered the Dolphins organization as the team's swing tackle with Terron Armstead on the left side and Austin Jackson on the right.
While Paul wasn't in line to start, he was getting significant reps in the offseason, as Armstead wasn't around the team. However, the veteran revealed on his podcast this week that he had to put Paul in his place early on.
"Yeah, you were a little different in the beginning, man," Armstead said. "You were a little hard head. You were checking people and all that good stuff as a rookie. So, you know, I wasn't there most of the offseason, but when I got there in training camp. I'm like, 'Pat talking to y'all like this? Man, what is going on?' I had to be a little tough on you at the beginning."
Paul went on to play 337 total offensive snaps at both tackle spots as a rookie while filling in for the two starters. He didn't have the most success, but after Armstead retired the following offseason, he took over as the starting left tackle and was better last year.
Now, heading into 2026, Paul has a chance to prove himself as a capable starter and a piece that Jeff Hafley and Jon-Eric Sullivan can build around going forward.
