Tennessee softball defeats Virginia to win Knoxville Regional final

The NCAA Tournament Knoxville Regional final was contested on Sunday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. No. 1 seed Tennessee (45-10) defeated No. 2 seed Virginia (39-14), 5-1. The Lady Vols were the visiting team.

Karlyn Pickens (14-7) started for Tennessee and pitched seven innings. She recorded nine strikeouts and 126 pitches, including 72 strikes, against 29 batters.

Tennessee left fielder Taelyn Holley scored the first run of the game on a third inning sacrifice fly by Sophia Knight. Ella Dodge scored an unearned run in the fourth inning for the Lady Vols after Holley reached on a fielding error.

In the fifth inning, Tennessee first baseman Makenzie Butt singled and scored Knight. Holley extended the Lady Vols' lead to, 4-1, in the sixth inning with a solo home run. Alannah Leach also hit a two-run double in the sixth inning, scoring Bella Faw.

Kelsey Hackett started for Virginia in left field.

Tennessee also defeated the Cavaliers, 7-5, on May 16 in the Knoxville Regional to advance to the regional final. The Lady Vols are a No. 7 national seed and advanced to a super regional against No. 10 national seed Georgia.
