There have been moments this season where the Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen has looked great. Relievers have come in and retired hitters in clutch moments.
On Thursday night, though, at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix, that did not happen. Reliever Tanner Scott came in to stop the Arizona Diamondbacks from rallying late. Scott worked one-third of an inning in the ninth inning.
Ketel Marte stepped up to the plate and smoked his 11th home run this season over the left-field wall and set off a home-plate celebration as the Diamondbacks won 3-2. It is the first game this season where the Dodgers lost in walk-off fashion.
Scott falls to 1-3 this season and carries a 2.42 ERA. Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald earned the win, going to 2-4 with a 3.47 ERA.
Justin Wrobleski worked six innings of shutout ball, allowing just six hits in his effort. Wrobleski has been one of Dodgers manager Dave Roberts' starters this season, and he showed on Thursday night that Roberts can trust in him some.
Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson was also good for his team, too. All of this, though, led to some late-game scoring antics.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings before the Dodgers broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Will Smith grounded into a double play with Kyle Tucker on base. Now, with two outs and Santiago Espinal on base, Ryan Ward doubled to center. Espinal scored and the Dodgers were up 1-0.
Dalton Rushing's RBI single to left brought home and Espinal scored on the play and Los Angeles doubled its lead to 2-0. Unfortunately, that was all the offense that the Dodgers put together against Arizona.
Corbin Carroll, who has been on a tear lately, smacked his ninth home run this season. It was a solo shot and got the Diamondbacks on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Arizona moved within 2-1.
With one out, Ryan Waldschmidt singled and moved Gabriel Moreno to second base. Then, with two outs, Geraldo Perdomo singled to center and Moreno scored, tying the game at 2-2.
All of this led to Marte's heroics, leaving Dodgers fans staring at a rare walk-off loss.
Los Angeles was 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left four total runners on base. The Dodgers are still in first place in the National League West Division at 40-23. As for the Diamondbacks, they are in second place in the NL West at 33-29.
The Dodgers don't get a day off and start a weekend series at Dodger Stadium on Friday night against their Los Angeles neighbors, the Los Angeles Angels. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
Fans will be looking to see if the Los Angeles bullpen can revert back to some successful outings after losing in a tough, tough way against the Diamondbacks. Scott will look for redemption, too.
