It's March Madness, and the Iowa Hawkeyes are still dancing! With a gutsy win over the Clemson Tigers, Iowa is moving on to the Round of 32 and has picked up an NCAA Tournament win in Ben McCollum's first season. Iowa played their style to perfection and dragged Clemson into the mud with them.
In a methodical team effort that saw contributions from all over the court, Iowa took down Clemson 67-61 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament and has set up a date with the winner of No. 1 Florida or No. 16 Prairie View A&M.
As Iowa rests up and begins preparations for the Round of 32, check out the takeaways from Iowa's NCAA Tournament victory over Clemson.
All year long, the question was whether Iowa could get help when a team throws defenders at Bennett Stirtz. Well, tonight, was that in some sort of way. Bennett Stirtz did not have his best game as a Hawkeye, but Iowa still found a way with the supporting cast shouldering the load.
Led by Kael Combs, who was absolutely massive for Iowa today with 15 points, Iowa also got 14 points from Alvaro Folgueiras, 8 from Cooper Koch, and 7 from Tate Sage off the bench, which proved to be a difference maker. Iowa needed this support as Stirtz was just 4-17 on the day. Getting this sort of performance had been a long time coming and was lovely to see.
On a day where Iowa played a slow, gritty, grind-it-out game, they won this game with the rebounding presence they had. This was simply fantastic and saved the day for Iowa when they did not shoot great overall or from three-point range.
Iowa won the rebounding battle by a dominant margin of 40 to 27. What was even more important were the offensive rebounds. Iowa reeled in 15 offensive boards, which, in a slow, methodical game, made all the difference in letting Iowa have extended possessions, while eating clock. A special shoutout goes to Cam Manyawu, who led the way with 10 boards and was a monster for the Hawkeyes in the paint.
It's the NCAA Tournament. Anything can happen. All you can do is live to fight another day, and the Iowa Hawkeyes have done just that. In an already objectively successful year for Ben McCollum in his first year as Iowa's head coach, he has now notched a March Madness win, which is icing on the cake.
Up next for Iowa, barring an incredibly historic upset, is a date with the Florida Gators in the Round of 32 for a spot in the Sweet 16. Sure, it is in Tampa, and will be an incredibly pro-Florida crowd, but Iowa has taken top teams to the brink before. Why not get crazy here?
