Final
Twins 3, Guardians 1
Starting pitcher performance
Fresh off an 11-strikeout game against the Houston Astros the last time out, Twins starter Taj Bradley threw seven innings of one-run ball on Tuesday night. He struck out 10 batters in the outing, marking the first time in his career that he’s hit double-digit strikeouts in consecutive starts.
His cutter was particularly effective against the Guardians lineup. Bradley upped the usage of the pitch and got 17 of his 25 swinging strikes on the pitch. Seven of his 10 strikeouts came on the cutter.
The only blemish on his day came in the second inning when he allowed a home run to Rhys Hoskins. It was one of just three hits the Guardians (47-45) collected against Bradley in the Twins’ (45-47) win.
Player of the game
While the Twins had some offensive contributions throughout the lineup, Bradley was the star for the Twins on Tuesday night.
Key moment
Normally a solid defensive and fundamentally sound team, the Guardians gave the Twins extra chances in the second inning and the Twins took advantage.
Kody Clemens reached base on an error to begin inning and more shaky defense followed, allowing the Twins to load the bases with no outs. Austin Martin’s sacrifice fly tied up the game at the time, and Brooks Lee then followed with a single, driving in the go-ahead run.
They scored on more time late with Josh Bell motoring home from first base on a Clemens triple in the eighth.
Up next
Connor Prielipp (2-5, 4.96 ERA) will start the second game of the series on Wednesday against the Guardians, who will counter with Slade Cecconi (4-6, 4.44 ERA).
