UConn men’s hockey’s first Olympian is also its first gold medalist. On Sunday, Tage Thompson captured gold in Milan after Team USA beat Canada 2-1 in overtime.

Thompson recorded 10:02 of ice time and put four shots on net in the victory. Across the tournament, he notched three goals and an assist while leading the US with 18 shots.

The former Husky scored in the opening game against Latvia, netted another in the final preliminary round contest vs. Germany, then bagged a goal and an assist in the semifinal blowout of Slovakia.

This is Thompson’s second major title on the international stage. Last May, he scored the game-winning goal to lift the US to the 2025 IIHF World Championship crown.

By capturing Olympic gold, Thompson has further cemented himself as the best player to come out of UConn. He has more career goals, assists and points in the NHL than any other program alumni and has played the second-most games (505), behind only Todd Krygier (543).

During his time in Storrs from 2015-17, Thompson put up 33 goals and 31 assists in 70 career contest — good for .91 points per game, which ranks first in the program’s Hockey East Era.
