Andrew Surprenant hit every green and didn't card a bogey as he shot to the top of the leaderboard of the New Hampshire Stroke Play Championship on Wednesday.
The Beaver Meadow Golf Course member posted an 8-under-par 63 at Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth on the second day of the 54-hole tournament.
Surprenant, a 20-year-old Boscawen resident, is at 8-under 134 and owns a one-stroke lead on second-place Joe Leavitt entering the final round on Thursday at Portsmouth Country Club in Greenland.
Surprenant has shown superb ball striking during the tournament. The Southern New Hampshire University golfer hit 17 of 18 greens on Tuesday, when he carded an even-par 71 at Breakfast Hill Golf Club in Greenland to finish the first round tied for fifth place.
Thursday's final round will feature the low 40 players after the tournament's first two days.
"Ball striking hasn't been the issue, it's just been the putter," Surprenant told NH Golf on Wednesday. "But the putter finally kept up today."
Surprenant collected eight birdies at Pease — four each on the front and back nine.
Leavitt, the 2014 Stroke Play champion, shot a 6-under 65 on Wednesday to remain in second place. The 32-year-old Kingston resident carded an eagle, six birdies and one bogey after his 1-under 70 at Breakfast Hill on Tuesday.
Laconia Country Club member Noah Farland, who led the field after the first round, and Nashua CC member Bryce Zimmerman enter Thursday tied for third place with 4-under 138 scores.
Jim Cilley, a Laconia CC member and the 2021 Stroke Play champion, and Farmington CC member Derek Dinwoodie are tied for fifth place at 3 under.
