Sunderland held by relegated Wolves

Sunderland’s push for European qualification suffered a setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by already-relegated Wolves at Molineux.

The visitors started brightly and took the lead in the 17th minute when Nordi Mukiele rose highest to head home and put Régis Le Bris’ side in control.

However, the game turned shortly after when Dan Ballard was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for pulling Tolu Arokodare’s hair, leaving Sunderland to play over an hour with ten men.

Wolves gradually took advantage of the extra space and eventually found an equaliser in the second half. Santiago Bueno met Hugo Bueno’s corner with a firm header to bring the hosts level.

Despite being a man down, Sunderland still threatened, with Granit Xhaka going close late on, but they were unable to find a winner.

The result leaves Sunderland 12th in the Premier League and four points off the European places, while Wolves ended a long goal drought with their first strike in 47 days.
