The Golden State Warriors' regular season has come to an end, and now, Steve Kerr's team must prepare to face the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the play-in tournament. The winner of that game will then face the loser of the Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers for the opportunity to go head-to-head with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the opening round of the playoffs.
After a season littered with injury issues, Golden State must figure things out on the fly, and that includes how to get the best out of the Stephen Curry and Kristaps Porzingis combo. On paper, that duo should be an elite pick-and-roll weapon, with elite shot-making on both sides, both on the perimeter and the interior. When speaking with the media following the Warriors' 115-110 loss to the Clippers, Curry discussed the chemistry he has with Porzingis and what the championship-winning big man brings to the rotation.
"Just two threats out there, I think that's the biggest thing," Curry said, via Joseph Dycus. "He can stretch the floor as big. He can take advantage of mismatches in the post. And when we really get the ball moving, we try to create good shots for him. He can create driving angles because he's a guy; wherever he is, you don't really want to sag off of him too much. It hasn't been a crazy big sample size, but. I think we figured out enough of the chemistry, even in the pick-and-roll. There were some things tonight that we worked on. Just knowing where he likes to be on the floor, timing and all that type of stuff. We're gonna have to put it together in a do-or-die game on Wednesday."
Like Curry, Porzingis has dealt with health/injury issues this season. However, Golden State's best chance of success will come with those two on the floor. The scoring threats they provide will help unlock the Clippers defense, opening things up for others, both on the perimeter and in the driving lanes.
While we haven't seen too much of the Curry/Porzingis partnership, the upside is clear. If both can stay healthy throughout Wednesday's play-in game, and the rest of the roster performs at a high level, Steve Kerr's team should have a good chance of coming away with a win. That is, of course, if they can find a way to stifle Kawhi Leonard, and that's not an easy challenge.
