President Donald J. Trump dances his way out rally in the fieldhouse at Rockland Community College May 22, 2026.

ESPN personality Smith made his position crystal clear on his SiriusXM Radio show. He didn’t just say he was unhappy with President Donald Trump attending Game Three. He went further, laying direct responsibility at Trump’s feet if the Knicks drop the game.

“If it causes the Knicks to lose tonight, I’m blaming him. I’m blaming the president of the US. Damnit, I hope the GOP loses votes because of it if we lose tonight.”

Smith argued that the added security presence could disrupt the game-day atmosphere and create logistical challenges for fans attending one of the franchise’s biggest home games in decades.

The backdrop only amplified the discussion. The Knicks entered Game Three holding a 2-0 lead over the Spurs in the NBA Finals. The Knicks had already secured home-court advantage by winning both games on the road.

Trump’s appearance is historic regardless of the noise around it. It marks the first time a sitting president has attended an NBA Finals game, and the first presidential appearance at any NBA game since Barack Obama attended a Chicago Bulls opener in 2015. Trump confirmed James Dolan extended the invitation and hinted he may return for Game Four on Wednesday.

Smith’s remarks also reflected broader frustration among portions of the fan base. Reports noted concerns over airport-style screening procedures, a strict no-bag policy, and the cancellation of the popular watch party outside MSG. City officials later directed fans toward alternate viewing locations across New York.

The basketball story remains the biggest one. The Spurs face the daunting task of climbing out of a 0-2 deficit. The Spurs must now win.

Whether Trump’s visit ultimately impacts the atmosphere is impossible to measure. Smith ensured the conversation extended well beyond basketball. The controversy will fade quickly if the Knicks hold home-court advantage.
