Steelers trade candidate could find new home with Vikings, Rams or Jets originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a crowded situation in their quarterbacks room.
Pittsburgh finally got a commitment from Aaron Rodgers, which means the Steelers now have four quarterbacks on their roster.
The other three are veteran Mason Rudolph, second-year signal-caller Will Howard and rookie Drew Allar.
There is just no way the Steelers are going to carry four quarterbacks on their roster. Teams don't even like carrying three these days.
Seeing as how Pittsburgh does not have a locked-in future quarterback on its roster, the team would be wise to hold on to Allar and Howard.
Mason Rudolph named trade candidate
Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker is taking everything into account and believes Rudolph is a clear trade candidate.
Here's Locker's thoughts on the Steelers possibly moving Rudolph this offseason:
Pittsburgh finally addressed its overarching quarterback saga by re-signing Aaron Rodgers, but it now has another quandary to sort out with its remaining options.
Rudolph returned to Pittsburgh last season to operate as Rodgers’ backup. Despite the four-time MVP suffering a wrist injury that caused him to miss time, Rudolph didn’t fully capitalize. The former third-round pick garnered only a 50.5 PFF passing grade, tossing three turnover-worthy plays with zero big-time throws in his only start against the Bears. At the same time, Rudolph is a seasoned backup who can enter a game and at least be a manager.
After the Steelers selected nearby prospect Drew Allar in the third round, it leaves the team with Rodgers, Allar, Rudolph and Will Howard in its quarterback room. It seems unlikely that all four will be retained, and Mike McCarthy very well may opt for a youth movement behind Rodgers.
Rudolph has proven himself to be a solid backup that can keep a team afloat during his career.
We saw evidence of that in 2023, when he went 3-0 and completed 74.3% of his passes for 719 yards and three touchdowns to zero picks.
He would be a valuable asset for a contending team that has a shaky backup situation.
The Rams are one of those teams.
Los Angeles drafted Ty Simpson and has Stetson Bennett, but Jimmy Garoppolo could retire and that would leave the Super Bowl contender in need of a veteran behind Matthew Stafford.
The Jets aren't anywhere near being a contender, but they were in the market for a veteran quarterback in Russell Wilson, so clearly they want some experience behind Geno Smith.
In Minnesota, the Vikings are set to have a competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, a competition we believe the former will win. It's not crazy to think McCarthy could be traded if he loses to Murray, in which case the Vikings will be needing a new backup.
The Steelers are in no rush to trade Rudolph because they can carry 90 players on their offseason roster, but we would be shocked if he isn't moved before final cuts.
