Two struggling giants—Manchester United and Spurs—have one shot at redemption: win the Europa League Final and secure a Champions League ticket. With Heung-min Son back from injury, Spurs may have found their edge just in time.

Spurs and Man United are currently in 16th and 17th place in the Premier League, with the same amount of points (39) and one position away from the relegation zone. This was the worst season both teams have had in years, but even that didn’t prevent them from reaching the Europa League final. Fortunately for them, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and Southampton are already confirmed in the Championship next season.

Tottenham played the last rounds of the Europa League and Premier League without its biggest star, Heung-min Son, but now he’s back in action after over a month, and he's putting in extra miles to ensure he's 100% for the big final next Wednesday.

In the matchup against Aston Villa on Friday, the Spurs decided to field their starter team, with Ben Davies, and let other young stars and Son play - out since April 14 with a foot injury. Villa are still fighting for a Champions League spot, so they went full speed against Tottenham.

Should Son start at the Europa League final for the Spurs?

Statistically, this is the worst goal-scoring season in Son’s career in the Premier League since joining the Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. The striker scored only seven goals, marking the 2024/25 season as the only one under 10 goals for the club. According to The Athletic, Heung-min Son has 25 goals more than the expected based on the quality of his chances.

The South Korean striker is one of the most clinical finishers in the Premier League, and even in turbulent seasons, he has managed to find his way and establish himself as one of the best. When Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich, Son became the center-forward and reignited his goal-scoring ability. On the other hand, when Dominic Solanke arrived from the Cherries in the summer of 2024, he was once again moved to the left-wing.

Son has been losing space in the Spurs with new players coming in and playing in a way that the manager Ange Postecoglou enjoys and seems to be working, but an experienced player like him is an important asset in a final against a team he plays every season for the past 10 years.
