Local softball teams threw out their first pitches of the new season this week. The Astoria girls took to the mound looking to throw an encore presentation, Seaside faced off with Banks, Warrenton was victorious and the Knappa girls dropped their opening game. Elsewhere, local golfers took to the course in dual matches.
Astoria softball keeps momentum going
The best team this spring sports season showed why Wednesday night.
The Astoria girls softball team returned to CMH Field as the reigning 4A State Softball Champions and started off their title defense with an impressive win. Taking on perennial 3A playoff contender Yamhill-Carlton, the Fishermen took home the 1-0 victory behind junior Taryen Wray.
After being the backup pitcher to Maddie Wilkin the last two seasons, Wray is ready to take the reins as the go to pitcher for 2026. With the air being heavy and with overcast skies, the weather was perfect for pitching. Both Wray and her counterpart, Taylor Bradfield, threw up zeroes.
Wray went the distance, striking out nine batters and allowing just two hits in seven innings. For Astoria bats, this was a good opening test. With the Fishermen out to replace both Kya Lindell and Nayomi Holmstedt, facing a quality pitcher like Bradfield allows the girls to work off some early season rust. The Fishermen had multiple opportunities to break the game open, but were not able to get the key hit.
Hailee Svensen went 2-3 as the new leadoff hitter with her only out being a hard hit flyout to left field. Aryana Adams went 1-3 and barely missed a home run her final at bat and senior Kate Barendse went 1-3 with a sacrifice bunt. New additions to the lineup, Maggie Falleur, Kysa Whitsett and Kilee Svensen, went 0-6 as the 7,8,9 hitters. But the Fishermen expect those three to get going once they gain confidence facing live varsity pitching for the first time.
Astoria took the field once more against Gladstone on Friday. Then the girls will travel east for a star-studded spring break tournament at The Dalles next week.
Sloppy fielding dooms Seaside
Errors doomed the Seaside softball team in its Monday game against Banks.
The first game jitters struck for Seaside as the girls made six errors in the first game against a reloading Banks team. These errors led to a 9-6 loss for the Seagulls.
Despite the sloppy fielding, it was a good day at the plate for Seaside as they put up six runs on seven hits. Mack Haag led the way with a 2-2 day and also drove in three runs from the seventh spot in the order. Freshman Jahzara Marshall also had two hits and a stolen base. Finally Olvyia Morse went 1-4 with two runs batted in for Seaside.
Allie Corder was the hard luck loser as she only gave up three earned runs in her six innings of work. She gave up eight hits and struck out six in the first outing of the year.
Even with the loss, there are positives to take away from this game as the Seagulls offense looks to be improved from last season.
Warrenton opens with solid win
The Warrenton girls are on the board after a 7-4 victory against Tillamook on Monday.
Behind the tag team effort of pitchers Gracelynn Brown and Scarlet Anderson, the Warriors started off their campaign with a bang. Brown and Anderson combined to allow eight hits, just one earned run and had eight total strikeouts in the seven innings they worked.
At the plate it was a big day for the heart of the lineup as both Natalie Davis and Lucy Smith had a two hit day. Davis and Smith also had one run batted in a piece. Other Warriors with RBIs included Hannah Leavitt, Brown and ninth-place hitter, Lily Duncan.
Next up for the Warriors is the Seaside Spring Break Tournament starting next Monday. Warrenton will open up against Stayton at 1 p.m.
Knappa falls to Kennedy
Knappa softball fell in five innings to Kennedy on Tuesday.
After reaching the second round of the 2A State Playoffs last year, the Loggers fell to a tough opponent in their season opening match. With work-horse pitcher Taylor Pass no longer on the mound, Knappa will be looking for another pitcher to replace her in the early season.
This season might be one where the bats will have to do some heavy lifting, at least early in the year, as the Loggers work out some of the kinks.
Knappa is set to travel to Stanfield for a Monday game against Echo/Stanfield. That game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and is the first of five games for Knappa next week.
Astoria boys golf takes the win against Warrenton
On Thursday, the Astoria boys golf team had a good scoring day in difficult conditions to defeat Warrenton.
With the overcast weather and rain, the boys played just nine holes and the Fishermen came out on top in the team competition despite Warrenton sophomore Gavin Brown winning the individual portion handedly.
The Astoria boys scored a total of 186 to win the dual match, while a new look Warrenton scored 233.
Ty Cereghino, Kevin Dunn and Benjamin Murdock all had a good nine holes as they scored 45, 45 and 46 respectively. With those three scoring like that in the first match, the Fishermen look to have multiple guys capable of dropping into the 80s this season. Dominic Rico scored a 50 and Sawyer Rochon was the fifth scorer with a 53.
For Warrenton, they were led by Brown. The super sophomore put together a great round of three over par 39. Devon Sturgell was the second scorer with a 52, Kadin Fulton scored a 68 and Diego Canchola had a 74.
Seaside girls golf shoots well in win
The Seaside girls played an impressive round of golf against rival Astoria.
The Seagulls won the nine hole match with a total score of 63, while Astoria scored a 132. Seaside occupied the first four spots as Kylie Keranen, Lolly Rahl, Makenna White and Hayley Archibald all scored well in tough conditions at Gearhart Golf Links.
Keranen shot a 10 over 47 in the nine hole match to take the overall title. Rahl followed close behind with a 50, White scored a 56 and Archibald had a 58.
For Astoria, Jane Phillips and Lina Lee led the way with fifth place finishes and a score of 66. They were followed by Hadley Painter with a 72, Eleanor Nye with a 76 and Emmily Schlosser with an 82.
