Over the past several weeks, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has found herself at the center of some controversy after she spoke out against transgender women competing in women’s sports. As a result of those comments, she did not exactly receive a warm welcome from fans on Sunday afternoon.
During Sunday afternoon’s showdown with the Minnesota Lynx in Minnesota, Cunningham was heavily booed every time she touched the ball as fans in attendance expressed their displeasure.
Cunningham Spoke Out on Trans Athletes
This whole ordeal began last month when Cunningham decided to take a stand on transgender athletes.
In a recent interview as part of an ESPN profile, Cunningham was asked about her political views, including the “MAGA Barbie” nickname that has been attached to her in recent months. During her response, the Indiana Fever guard addressed the topic of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” she told ESPN. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Just a few days later, Cunningham reaffirmed those comments instead of backing away from them.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said earlier this week. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
Cunningham later addressed the subject again in a post on X while reacting to a recent incident involving two teenage girls who claimed they were verbally confronted by a Seattle Storm co-owner, who was later suspended.
“I truly believe there is a safe space and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men. Everyone is welcome at my table! You can disagree and still be kind,” Cunningham wrote in a post on X. “Bravo to those girls for standing up for what they believe. You’ll be hearing from me soon yay for gifts. Truly embarrassing of the co-owner.”
Although Cunningham was not made available to reporters following the Fever’s victory over the Seattle Storm earlier this week, she addressed the ongoing backlash before Friday night’s matchup against the Portland Fire, making it clear that she does not plan to shy away from the criticism surrounding her comments.
Cunningham heavily booed
While Cunningham has had her fair share of supporters after her controversial stance, she has faced her fair share of opposition, as well. Minnesota Lynx legendary coach Cheryl Reeve offered quite a different stance than Cunningham ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game between the Fever and the Lynx, and the team’s fans followed suit.
During Sunday’s game, the Lynx fans showered Cunningham with boos every time she touched the ball on the court.
This is a similar reception to the one Cunningham received in Portland on Friday when she was booed as fans waved trans pride flags.
We’ll have to see whether or not Cunningham continues to receive this reaction from fans over the next several weeks.
