Major League Baseball’s announcement on Tuesday that it was lifting the lifetime ban on Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson was a big hit for some fans, while others cried foul.

Rose died in September at the age of 83, while Jackson died in 1951 at the age of 64. Both received lifetime bans from MLB because of gambling allegations.

In his statement announcing the reinstatements, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said the bans are supposed “to protect the game from individuals who pose a risk to the integrity of the sport.”

However, Manfred said that “once an individual has passed away, the purposes of [the bans] have been served,” and added, “obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game.”

Some people cheered the news, and the fact that it finally makes Rose and Jackson eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Others didn’t think suspected cheaters should be celebrated.

Every MLB announcer tonight: “With the lifetime bans for gambling now lifted for Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe, should they make the Hall Of Fame? Bet now at Draft Kings and Fan Duel, promo code ‘lifetime ban’”

The only good thing about Pete Rose being lifted off the permanent ban is that soon we won't have to listen to the worst sports-talk radio topic of all-time.

I do not give a fudge about Pete Rose’s ban being lifted. He was a crappy human on and off the field.

It's hard to be a league completely in bed with gambling and continue the charade of banning Pete rose. That permanent ban had to be lifted

MLB commish Manfred did right. Lifetime ban ends with the person's life.
My take for 40 years: I didn't think Pete Rose should be reinstated based on clear clubhouse sign prohibiting gambling. But if he was, baseball had to also lift ban of Shoeless Joe. HOF an immortal award.
