Argentina pulled off a dramatic comeback victory to defeat England 2-1 in the 2026 World Cup semifinals.

For a moment, it appeared as if England would reach its first World Cup final since it last won the tournament 60 years ago when Anthony Gordon broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 55th minute. Rather than press for another — and possibly game-clinching — goal, England manager Thomas Tuchel had his team bunker in defensively. This strategy backfired in brutal fashion, with Argentina pulling off another late rally for victory.

Pundits and fans alike had thoughts:

On the FOX postgame show, global soccer icon-turned-analyst Zlatan Ibrahimovic was confused by Tuchel's tactics.

"England stopped playing when they scored the goal. I don't know why ... Tuchel made some changes, he went too defensive," Ibrahimovic said. "Scaloni went more offensive. They [Argentina] didn't make panic moves. The best team won."

Bunkering……brutal decision. Brutal.

will struggle to live this one down.

Tuchel…..any different than Southgate????

Thomas Tuchel had all 11 England players behind the ball after they took the lead.

Egypt and Switzerland parked the and lost late Vs Argentina .
Thomas Tuchel saw that tape with his own eyes, ignored it thinking it would be different for England
This is an all time managerial miss.

️ WAYNE ROONEY BLAMES THOMAS TUCHEL FOR ENGLAND'S DEFEAT TO ARGENTINA:

️“I knew this would happen the moment I saw the changes.

You score in the 65th minute and then start bringing on defenders? Why?”

Far too defensive, far too early from Thomas Tuchel against a team not just with quality, but who have repeatedly shown they refuse to be beaten. You don’t encourage Leo Messi’s Argentina, you don’t feed their fighting spirit.

Thomas Tuchel was appointed so England won the big games. The tactics and the substitutions after taking the lead failed miserably. Trying to hold on to a lead, inviting constant pressure for half an hour. If this had been Gareth Southgate…

There was no attacking threat after…

Thomas Tuchel went for the same strategy as vs Mexico without, it seems, appreciating Argentina have the attacking ability to unpick a low block over 30mins. That is a pitiful way to exit the World Cup at this stage.

I like Thomas Tuchel, and he’s made some great calls during this World Cup, but he’s absolutely killed us in this game.

If he was brought in for his superior in-game management to Southgate when it mattered most, he has failed his biggest test - and failed it badly.

I genuinely can’t recall a game of this magnitude where a coach has cost his team in this way. Extraordinary and damaging for Tuchel. https://t.co/xOKaTXAgZi

Big, big questions for Thomas Tuchel there. Gareth Southgate was hammered for tactical cowardice but England were neither bold nor brave enough there. Been good until now but changes were all wrong.
