Having won two of the first three Women’s World Cups since its inception in 1991, the U.S. hadn’t lifted the trophy in 16 years when they arrived north of the border to Canada for the 2015 FIFA championship. By then, the U.S. women were on the verge of seeing international failure become part of their program’s DNA.
That all changed in 2015, as the U.S. embarked on a rampage of international domination that began with the tournament in Canada. After topping their group, the U.S. shut out Colombia, China, and Germany en route to the final against Japan in Vancouver.
There, Carli Lloyd cemented her moment in history as she scored the fastest hat-trick ever in the Women’s World Cup, coming just 16 minutes after kickoff. She capped it off to put the U.S. up 4-0 in stunning fashion as she lobbed goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori from nearly the halfway line. Prior to this, no team had ever scored more than two goals in a World Cup final, but Lloyd beat that on her own to win the 2015 Golden Ball award for best player at the tournament.
