Sky's DiJonai Carrington tries to clarify 'White Privilege' post after ejection, hard foul on Sophie Cunningham

DiJonai Carrington is trying to clear up her "White Privilege" post on social media.

The Chicago Sky guard was ejected after committing a hard foul on Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham on Saturday. Then, shortly after being thrown out of the loss in Chicago, Carrington took to social media.

She posted "White Privilege" in all caps and tagged the Fever on Threads while the game was still going on. That post, as of Monday afternoon, is still up.

But on Monday, Carrington addressed the post while responding to former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho. She insisted that she "never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege."

"Try exercising your critical thinking skills, I know you studied psych," she wrote. "Furthermore, I'm the LAST thing from ignorant or asinine when it comes to speaking on "white privilege", do ya research on that one. I actually went to school, one of the top universities might I add, to educate myself on this exact subject. I would never use that term as a rhetorical weapon knowing the historical and social weight it holds without having the proper evidence to substantiate it."

Carrington did not provide an alternative explanation for what her post meant.

Late in the first quarter of Saturday's contest at Wintrust Arena, Carrington whacked Cunningham in the face hard as she went up for a layup. Officials quickly reviewed the play and upgraded the foul to a flagrant 2, which prompted Carrington's ejection.

Carrington seemed shocked that her foul was upgraded, which officials said was due to her windup, impact and follow-through, and that there was a high potential for injury with Cunningham in a vulnerable position.


Cunningham and the Fever have been at the center of the WNBA's latest controversy after she spoke about transgender women in sports in an ESPN profile. Rallies have been held outside of Fever away games, too. The team has distanced itself from those rallies and made comments focused on inclusion. Cunningham, after initially doubling down on her stance, has since said she wants everyone to "get back to basketball."

Cunningham was asked about the foul after the game, and said she thought it had nothing to do with race. She did, though, think it was "intentional."

"I've never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent-up stuff," Cunningham said. "So get your s**t off. That's fine, I can take it."

Carrington has averaged 9.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game this season, her sixth in the league. The Sky, with a 12-20 record, will take on the Seattle Storm next on Monday night.
