NFL fans have witnessed some surprising Pro Bowl selections recently, particularly with Tyler Huntley making the roster in 2022. However, on Monday, we may have seen an even more unexpected choice.
Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback and former Colorado Buffaloes star Shedeur Sanders was named to the 2025 Pro Bowl roster as a replacement, presumably for the AFC Champion New England Patriots signal caller Drake Maye, who will play in Super Bowl LX instead. Sanders becomes the first fifth-round rookie to make a Pro Bowl since Puka Nacua. He is the first Colorado player named since David Bakhtiari in 2020.
With the Pro Bowl losing its luster in recent years, switching from a traditional football game to flag football, it has become more of a television event than a true showcase of the game's top players. Sanders' numbers during seven starts (1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, 10 interceptions) were not Pro Bowl worthy. Still, his last name and celebrity status for a fifth-round rookie make his presence ideal for a league hoping to get as many eyeballs as possible on its pre-Super Bowl event.
Given the circumstances, like injuries to other AFC quarterbacks, namely Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, Sanders was likely the best option over Justin Fields, Geno Smith, and Riley Leonard, to name a few. Sanders, who is currently in France with his brother Shilo, should be a big hit at the fan-forward event that is scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, at 8 p.m. ET at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.
Sanders will join Josh Allen and Justin Herbert as the AFC representatives at quarterback. Buff Nation can tune in to watch Sanders compete on ESPN, Disney XD or NFL+.
