Seniors Chris Simunek and Tayge Privett won a pair of matches back to back against O'Gorman to secure the 46-34 dual win for the Harrisburg boys wrestling team.
The Tigers then beat Sioux Falls Washington 67-12 to wrap up a 3-0 day at the O'Gorman Quad Meet Thursday. Harrisburg beat Sioux Falls Roosevelt 72-6 to open the event.
Simunek stepped up with his team trailing 29-23 and pinned O'Gorman's Kayen Hammer at 175 pounds. Head coach Nate Rotert reminded him how important his match was, and the senior delivered the maximum amount of points.
"The coach told me we're going to need a big win out of me," Simunek said. "I went out there and knew a pin would be huge, but a win would get us going in the right direction. Once I put him on his back, I was like, 'OK, let's get six.'"
Rotert has trusted Simunek all season to fill whatever hole is needed on a given day, and his senior stepped up big to give the Tigers a chance to win the dual.
"A guy like Chris Simunek, we've thrown him up and down weights, all over the place," Rotert said. "He kind of gets plugged in wherever. It's never about him, it's always what's best for the team and he did that again tonight."
Simunek set the stage for Privett, who delivered a dominant 19-3 tech fall at 190 pounds over Gavin Boyle. Privett got to his offense early and often and gave Harrisburg a 34-29 lead, one that it never relinquished.
"It felt amazing to do all the stuff I normally do and get in that zone," Privett said.
Rotert has relied on Privett all season and wasn't surprised at all to see another senior give his guys the lead for good.
"Tayge has been a horse for us all year," Rotert said. "He's one of our top guys, one of our leaders."
Harrisburg rolled outside of the O'Gorman meet. Simunek and Privett knew it was still important to wrestle hard and relish in the opportunity to compete as their final season winds down.
"The mentality was going out there and wrestle for each other," Simunek said. "We've got a lot of seniors on our team this year, so knowing that it was our last regular season dual brought us more together."
Rotert's team has eight seniors, all of whom have the state duals tournament and state individual tournament remaining. He's happy his upperclassmen are wrestling motivated heading into the postseason.
"You don't want to make it too big of a deal because it's high school wrestling and it's just something you do, it's a chapter of your life," Rotert said. "But it's a good reminder to the seniors that you aren't going to do this together next year. They have good heads on their shoulders and they understand how much it means."
The trio of wins snapped a 1-5 stretch in duals, which included losses to Sturgis Brown, Pierre T.F. Riggs, Watertown, Aberdeen Central and Brandon Valley. All of those teams have three or fewer losses, so the Tigers were happy to get a few wins under their belt before the postseason.
"We've come off of wrestling all five of the top teams in the state," Rotert said. "It's good to come in here and remind ourselves we're a pretty good team and get ready for the postseason."
The wins also came with the Tigers battling some sickness. Rotert said he had three or four backups wrestling Thursday, but they still performed at a high level.
Simunek feels this level of success in a right before the postseason can be huge for Harrisburg.
"It builds team chemistry," Simunek said. "Going into that final few weeks, we are more united as a team and we're primed to make a run next week."
The Tigers wrapped up their regular season with an 18-7 dual meet record and are currently the No. 6 seed in Class A. The Class A state duals tournament will be at Pierre T.F. Riggs High School on Friday, Feb. 13. The state individual tournaments will be at the Denny Sanford Premier Center from Thursday, Feb. 26 to Saturday, Feb. 28.

Keanu Lee (165 pounds) won by fall in 1:27 over Washington's Jacob Lingen and pinned Harrisburg's Logan Johns in 1:39. Slaton Jones bested Washington's Zayden Lee by 46-second pin and Harrisburg's Dylan Johnson by 19-4 tech fall in 3:31.

Isaac Weerheim (113 pounds) beat Washington's Silas Williams by 20-4 tech fall in 3:34 and Roosevelt's Gabriel Herzog by fall in 2:37. Braden Shoemaker (157 pounds) topped Washington's Aiden Smith by pin in 1:41 and Roosevelt's Carston Ringling by 21-5 tech fall 19 seconds into the second period. Harmon Kramer pinned Washington's Lingen in 4:40 and Roosevelt's Derek Riemann in 40 seconds.
