As Bryan Hoops tees it up this week at the Senior Amateur Championship at Frilford Heath in England, he certainly has momentum. It would be hard to find a time, however, when Hoops doesn’t have that advantage.
Hoops, the 57-year-old from Tempe, Arizona, is seemingly always riding good play and a strong recent finish. In this case, Hoops went overseas after back-to-back June victories in the Golfweek Senior National Championship and George C. Thomas Senior Invitational.
In the latter event, played at Los Angeles Country Club, Hoops edged Jerry Gunthorpe and Mike McCoy, the defending U.S. Senior Amateur champion, by a shot. At the Golfweek Senior National Championship, played at the Donald Ross-designed Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Hoops won by 10 shots.
For his dominant performance over the past month in senior amateur golf, Hoops has been named Golfweek’s Senior Player of the Month for June.
Hoops has teed it up plenty so far in 2026 with highlights coming at the Jones Cup Senior (third), Society of Seniors Senior Masters (win) and Society of Seniors Founders Cup (second), in addition to his recent victories. He finished 11th at last year’s Senior Amateur Championship at Walton Heath and also qualified into the 2025 ISPS Handa Senior Open at Sunningdale later in the month.
After his victory June 17 at the Golfweek Senior National Championship, Hoops told Golfweek he is signed up for Senior Open qualifying again this year. Last summer, Hoops spent four weeks overseas for the Senior Amateur and Senior Open.
Hoops also plans to tee it up at the Canadian Senior Amateur, a tournament in which he was third in 2025, and of course the U.S. Senior Amateur. Those tournaments will be played later in the fall.
Hoops is currently the top-ranked player, age 55 and over, in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He checks in at No. 311 overall, having climbed 21 spots after his latest two victories. His game is often used as a measuring stick for other players competing against him, particularly down the stretch.
Asked how he approaches that position in the game, Hoops told Golfweek he is embracing it.
“I expect just as much as a lot of the other players and officials are letting me know, ‘You’re on paper, you’ve got to win,’ – I understand the pressure and I accept that,” he said. “I just think I need to do what on paper I can do and I should do. There’s no pressure. I just expect to do really well in the next few years – hopefully this year, always earlier the better. It is what it is. There’s no pressure – it’s kind of in front of me. . . . I understand the window, I understand the timeline and the timeframe.”
