Livingston County hockey fans, at least those outside of Brighton, should circle their calendars for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, and plan a trip to Flint.
Barring a Miracle on Ice type of upset, that’s when No. 1 Howell and No. 3 Hartland will collide in a matchup worthy of a state championship game that will be played in a regional final at Dort Federal Event Center.
Both team received first-round byes and will face an unranked opponent in the regional semifinals, according to the schedule released Sunday, Feb. 8 by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
The reward for the winner is a likely state quarterfinal back in Flint on Saturday, Feb. 28 against six-time defending Division 1 champion Detroit Catholic Central. That means only one of the top three teams in the Division 1 rankings will make it to USA Hockey Arena for the semifinals.
Brighton fans will probably take a pass on the Hartland-Howell game because the Bulldogs will likely be playing Northville for a regional championship at 7:45 the same night at Novi Ice Arena.
Here is the schedule for the regionals involving county teams:
At Dort Federal Event Center
Wednesday, Feb. 18
Grand Blanc vs. Davison, 7:30 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 20
Grand Blanc-Davison winner vs. Howell, 5 p.m.
Essexville-Garber vs. Hartland, 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 25
Championship, 7:30 p.m.
(Winner advances to state quarterfinals vs. Detroit Skate Club regional winner at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at Dort Federal Event Center.)
At Novi Ice Arena
Tuesday, Feb. 17
Novi vs. Saline, 7:45 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 19
Ann Arbor Pioneer vs. Brighton, 5:15 p.m.
Novi-Saline winner vs. Northville, 7:45 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 25
Championship, 7:45 p.m.
(Winner advances to state quarterfinals vs. Southgate Civic Center regional winner at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at Novi Ice Arena.)
