When you think of Florida State football legends, Chris Weinke, Charlie Ward, and Jameis Winston come to mind on the offense. On the defense, you're right to think of Deion Sanders. The legendary cornerback played for the Seminoles from 1985 to 1988 and became a two-time All-American in his junior and senior years.
In 1987, Sanders had four interceptions along with 381 punt return yards. He followed up that with a 503-yard nation-leading return season in 1988 and ended up finishing eighth in Heisman voting. Sanders finished his FSU career with 14 interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns.
Sanders went on to be drafted fifth overall in 1989 by the Atlanta Falcons and had an equally legendary career in the NFL, becoming a two-time Super Bowl champion and NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1994.
Today, in 2026, he was named to Sporting News' 1980s All-America Team for his accomplishments. Alongside Sanders in the category of 80s greats are defensive lineman Reggie White of the Tennessee Volunteers, linebacker Brian Bosworth of the Oklahoma Sooners, and safety Ronnie Lott of the USC Trojans, to name a few.
Sanders wasn't the only Seminole legend to make one of the Sporting News' All-Decade Teams. Kicker Sebastian Janikowski and linebacker Marvin Jones both made the 1990s team.
