Dutch star Xandra Velzeboer claimed her second gold at the Milan/Cortina Games on Monday in the 1,000 metres race while Italian icon Arianna Fontana missed the medals in fourth.

Multiple world champion Velzeboer added the 1,000m gold to that from the 500m and the 2022 relay. She continued a family tradition, with her aunt, Monique Velzeboer, getting bronze over the distance in 1988.

Velzeboer took the lead with four laps to go to get the gold ahead of Canada's Courtey Sarault and South Korean skater Kim Gilli. It was the third medal for Sarault at the Games as she also won mixed event silver and 500m bronze.

Fontana got mixed gold and 500m silver but now had to settle for fourth. She lost all chances when she was pushed outside a little by China's Gong Li in an incident race judges not not deem grave enough for a punishment.
