The Denver Broncos made it a priority to re-sign many of their in-house free agents last month, including veteran tight end Adam Trautman.

Denver brought Trautman back on a three-year, $17 million contract that averages $5.66 million per season. That might sound a little rich for a tight end who totaled 20 receptions for 195 yards and one touchdown last fall, but Trautman's contributions beyond receiving have been praised by coach Sean Payton.

“You know exactly what you’re getting in the player," Payton said at the NFL's annual league meeting in Arizona last month. "Look, if we want to run the ball well, he’s one of the better blocking tight ends. He’s really good in pass protection. We evaluate every ounce of the tape. I’d be leery of someone that grabs three clips. We know exactly what Adam is. That was just going to take time to see where the market value went. So I’m glad he’s back."

Payton said losing assistant coaches to promotions with other clubs this offseason also increased the risk of losing in-house free agents because those coaches could target their old players.

"I don’t take him (Trautman) for granted because we knew — when you have [Ravens offensive coordinator] Declan [Doyle], who has left, and you have these other coaches, [Bills offensive coordinator] Pete [Carmichael] and [Buffalo defensive coordinator] Jim [Leonhard] — the other challenge with that is, they have a little more exposure to your free agents relative to [other players]. So that was a little bit of a concern.”

Fortunately for the Broncos, Trautman did not land in Baltimore or with the Bills, opting to remain in Denver for a fourth season. The 29-year-old tight end is entering his seventh year in the NFL with 115 receptions for 1,228 yards and 10 touchdowns on his career resume.
