The first move the Los Angeles Rams made after their 2025 season ended in the NFC title game was finding a new special teams coordinator. After firing Chase Blackburn in Week 17, the Rams knew they would need to address that spot on Sean McVay’s staff in the offseason and they got right to work.

McVay hired former Brownsspecial teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone to that same role in Los Angeles, doing so just days after the Rams’ loss to the Seahawks. He confirmed the hire of Ventrone and assistant Kyle Hoke during his media session on Monday, telling reporters that he’s had his eye on Ventrone for a long time.

"He's the guy I've had my eye on for a while," McVay said, via the Rams’ official site. "... Very aligned philosophically. He's got a great energy, a great edge. He's a great communicator. You talk to people when you do the vetting and the background and what he does in regards to just being able to uplift and elevate people he's around in situations he's a part of."

Ventrone is a former player himself, and a special teams ace, at that. He played a decade in the NFL and had stints with the Patriots, Browns and 49ers before getting into coaching in 2015.

At just 43 years old, he’s young like McVay. And McVay loves the energy he brings to coaching.

"There is an energy, there is a toughness mentally and physically that he provides," McVay said. "There is a style of play philosophically with how he believes in coaching, what his units have looked like, where he foundationally learned what he knows about this game. There is a lot of guys that he's kind of come from that have had really a ton of success as teams coordinators."

The Rams had one of the worst special teams units in the NFL last season, and though the Browns weren’t any better, the hope is that Ventrone can clean up some of the issues that plagued Los Angeles. That includes field goal protection, punt protection, kicking accuracy and simply fielding punts.

Ventrone’s special teams units previously ranked among the league’s best when he was in Indianapolis but things went sideways in Cleveland – as most things do when it comes to the Browns. The Rams hope he can get things back on track in L.A. rather quickly so that special teams doesn’t cost them multiple wins again next season.
